About Counselling
Counselling helps you to change something in yourself for the better. Once you have accepted that a change is a good thing then you have started yourself on the road to a better life.
If you have then asked for the help of a therapist you have engaged the help of someone who is experienced and who will put your interests first. You might see the therapist as a guide who has some idea of the territory, of what has gone before and who is completely on your side and honest, for better or for worse, during therapy.
I offer a good understanding of psychology, a theoretical understanding of many different therapeutic methods and experience of putting them into practice, long and varied personal life experience and a natural desire to help any client that I take on.
I should be seen as a guide most of the time and rarely as a leader. You are the expert on you, even though you may not realise this at first.
What happens in the sessions and between sessions is quite unpredictable. There will probably be a lot of talking, mainly by you, and a lot of listening by me. I will probably make suggestions rather than issue instructions.
There may be practical work to do, “in life”, between sessions. There may be hypnosis either to suggest new ways of thinking or to discover hidden stuff. There will be no intended personal criticism, judgement or absolute demands. There may be teaching of useful ideas developed by other talented psychologists and therapists past and present. It is not “carrot” or “stick” but change through self discovery.
You will be asked to take equal responsibility for the process. It is not something that I do to you. It is you changing yourself with whatever help and advice I can offer.
Any questions … Please ask.
